"'From the school children, in grateful remembrance, Empire Day, 1919.'
This was the simple and touching inscription which adorned the beautiful floral tributes placed on the graves of colonial soldiers who have died in this country during the war by Newcastle school children on Empire Day. Fifteen graves in all were decorated by flowers, nine in St. Andrew's Cemetery, three in Ashburton Roman Catholic Cemetery, Gosforth and one each in South Gosforth, Heaton, and Byker, and All Saints' cemeteries".
