“War Trophies Exhibition at Ovingham.
An exhibition of war trophies from the various battelfields of the war was opened yesterday by Lady Allendale (Bywell) at Ovingham Schoolroom. Col. Sir Thomas Oliver (Newcastle) presided, and there was a large attendance at the opening ceremony. The exhibition is in aid of the Ovingham Welcome Home Fund, and Mrs. C.F. Thorp (the Vicarage) and Mr. John Johnson, hon. Secs., have succeeded in securing a large collection of ancient and modern war trophies, medals, hospital appliances, etc. These articles have been lent by ladies and gentlemen in the district, and the show is of a very interesting nature. Amongst the exhibits is a specimen of the medal struck by the Germans to commemorate their dastardly torpedoing of the Lusitania, and a piece of stained glass from the ill-fated Cloth Hall, Ypres. Many photographs illustrating incidents on the fighting are on view. The exhibition will be re-opened today by Lady Victoria Percy (sister to the Duke of Northumberland), and Mrs. C.F. Thorp will preside over the opening ceremony”.
