Ambulances
The Northern Echo 08/03/1920 reports that many ambulances provided by the Joint War Committee of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St.John of Jerusalem which had been used on the battlefields had now been returned to the UK. It had been decided that these should be put into the hands of the Home Service Ambulance Committee for distribution all over the country to places where it was known that adequate means of quick transport for sick and injured persons was very badly needed. A charge would be made of 1s 3d per mile on the total mileage run in attending a case.
Hexham was identified as receiving an ambulance; there was a day and night contact, telephone number Hexham 27.
