"At the monthly meeting of the Hexham Rural Council, the Clerk read a letter from the Office Trophies Committee stating that, upon the recommendation of the Lord Lieutenant of the County, the following enemy stores were offered the Council for their safe care and custody: 1 helmet, 1 German wire cutter, 1 Austrian trenching tool; 1 German water bottle; 18 German rifles; 1 German carbine; 1 German body armour; 1 German bayonet and 1 Turkish bayonet. Mr. Battensby: Tell them they need not send them. The Chairman: If they cannot give us something else, these are hardly worth accepting. It was agreed that the Council refuse to accept them".
