WOODHORN

The Ghost of Thomas Chalkley
The churchyard at St. Mary’s, Woodhorn, is said to be haunted by the ghost of Tom Chalkley, a naval rating killed in action in 1914-18. The first appearance of the ghost, showing his fatal wounds, appeared before the official telegram arrived telling his parents of his death. (Good Ghost Guide, Jarrold).
His name, however, does not appear on the Roll of Honour for the Parish, nor, indeed, does the name Chalkley feature on any memorial as having served or died in Northumberland or Newcastle. Which does not, of course, mean that he did not go to war. Not everybody wanted names added to memorials.
There are one or two Chalkleys in the CWGC files who were serving at sea, but without more information it is not possible to be sure whether any of them are relevant.
