STAKEFORD & BOMARSUND

The name of Bomarsund
“The colliery was named Bomarsund after a Russian fortress taken by a British Naval force in the Crimean War. News of this important capture reached England as the Barrington Company were laying the foundations of ten cottages which were to accommodate those sinking the new shaft. To mark the victory over the Russian Bear, the row was named ‘Bomarsund’”.
