Bibles presented to men returning from the Great War
Mr. S. Thompson has told us about an old Bible belonging to his grandfather. He says:
"The Bible was presented to him at the unveiling of the Ashington War Memorial on Sunday November 9th 1924 by the Seaton Hirst Wesleyan Mission. It is inscribed thus:
"Presented to Thos. Thompson in recognition of services rendered for King and Country during the Great War".
Inside the Bible is a well-worn Order of Service, in fact it is broken into three pieces, however, all writing is still clearly legible, as are all the names of the fallen. Apparently the service was attended by His Grace the Duke of Northumberland and the Lord Bishop of Newcastle. The Bible also contains some preserved leaves which I assume were collected on the day, however, I cannot verify that".
