Drumhead service held in 1919
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 03/11/1919 reports the holding of a drumhead service organised by the Ex-Servicemen's Association, in memory of the men who had fallen. 3,000 people attended, with hundreds more who were unable to obtain admission. The service was held beside the Boer War Memorial fountain where a wreath was laid by the Countess of Ravensworth to honour those who fell in the Boer War.

A collection was taken which would be put towards the erection of a memorial to the fallen of the Great War.
