Local Soldiers’ Honours
Lord Mayor presents medals at the Town Hall

Yesterday the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, (Councillor Walter Lee) made a final distribution of medals won during the war by local soldiers who have now been demobilised. Since the war began about 250 war honours have been handed over by successive Lord Mayors, these including one V.C. (presented to Lieutenant J. Johnson), 20 Meritorious Medals; 40 Distinguished Conduct Medals; and 160 Military Medals, as well as various foreign decorations which have been presented. In every case the Lord Mayor, in office at the time, presented the recipients with a cheque and a box of cigarettes as a personal gift, there not being any fund in the city out of which the cost of these gifts could be defrayed.
