St.Mary's Roman Catholic School
The Wearside Catholic News 01/11/1919 reports:

"The popularity of Mr. E.C. Dougherty who, as reported in our last week’s issue, has retired from the headmastership of St.Mary’s Catholic Boys’ School, Newcastle, after having filled that position for thirty-seven years is evident from the fact that the school is commonly called “Dougherty’s School”. In a Government document received by the officials the school was designated “St. Dougherty’s School”. The patriotic record of the school is one of which it may be justly proud. Nearly 3,000 old boys joined the army, and out of that number thirty three gained commission, eighteen gained distinctions, whilst 287 had been killed."
