Muffled ringing in Newcastle.
As a solemn tribute to the men who have fallen in the great war, 12 members of the Durham and Newcastle Diocesan Association of Change Ringers, rang a peal of Stedman Cinques at the St. Nicholas' Cathedral, Newcastle, yesterday, standing as follows:- Treble, W. Barbour; 2, A. Dalton; 3, J. McKeag; 4, J.E. Kean; 5, W. Sinclair; 6, A. Holmes; 7, R.A. Gofton; 8, B. Horton; 9, A.F. Hillier; 10, B.C. Dixon; 11, R. Richards; tenor, J. Foreman. Weight of tenor, 37¾ cwt. in C sharp. This is the first peal rung on these bells since they were augmented to 12 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Lester-Newcombe, of this city, at Easter 1914. The peal was composed by Mr. J. Parker, of Sunderland, and conducted by Mr. W.H. Barber. Number of changes 5,007, rung in 3 hours 57 minutes.
