BYKER

Conservative WMC Welcome Home 1920
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 01/04/1920 reports:

A ‘Welcome Home’

Byker and Heaton Warriors entertained.

A ‘welcome home’ dinner to members and their sons who had served in the forces was given under the auspices if the Byker and Heaton Conservative Working Men’s Club at the Heaton Electric Palace, Heaton Road, Newcastle, last night, and was attended by a a large and enthusiastic gathering.”

(There then follows a list of dignitaries who attended and another of those who made their apologies).

Captain Joseph Bywell proposed: Our Fallen Comrades” and said five members and 32 members’ sons had fallen in the war. . . .

The members of the club ‘down the road’ had assisted valiantly in providing comforts, some £400 having been spent on these. They at home had only done what they should have done. They were delighted to welcome home their ‘boys’ and hoped they would have a very enjoyable night. The Chairman added that 75 members and 117 sons of members of the club had served with the forces, which he thought was a highly creditable record for a club of their dimensions. It was proposed to have the club’s roll of honour unveiled in a very short time.”

The menu contained a list of the fallen comrades:
