Plaque: Capt. Charles Bell, 1844

In St.Nicholas Church is a plaque which reads:

Sacred to the memory of
Captain Charles Bell, R.N.
son of the late Matthew Bell Esqr.
of Woolsington
drowned off the coast of New Zealand
whilst in command of H.M.S. Hazard
the 8th day of August 1844
in the 45th year of his age.
A sincere Christian
devoted to the service of his country
he was beloved by all for the generosity
of his disposition
and the warmth of his heart.

This tablet is erected by his widow
Rachel Anne daughter of
Robert William Brandling, Esqr.
of Low Gosforth.
