Suffering from exposure and the effects of an exhausting four day struggle to keep their open boat afloat, 22 survivors from the British Steamer Arlington Court, another victim of the Nazi terror drive against merchant shipping, reached safety today.
The men, some of whom come from the North East, were landed at an Eireann port by the Dutch motor vessel Algenib, having been picked up in the Atlantic.
But eleven members of the Arlington Court's crew, including a South Shields man, Joseph Wardle age 62] are missing. They were in other boats which have not been traced. The survivors were met by Ambulances on the quayside and all but two are making good recoveries from a trying ordeal.
The Arlington Court was torpedoed by U Boat U-43 on the 16th November 1939.
One of the casualties is Thomas Cutter from Newbiggin who is remembered at Newbiggin on N10.04.
