Harton Colliery War Fund Gifts
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 05/01/1920 reports:

"Harton Colliery War Fund Gifts
A total of £4,200 contributed.
Mr. W.O. Tate, manager of Harton Colliery, South, Shields, on behalf of the Solders' and Sailors' Reception Fund connected with the colliery, has presented to the father of the late Sergt. J.A. Short a gold watch and chain, in recognition of the deceased soldier's having won military honours.

Mr. George Loudon and Mrs. James Giles, treasurer and secretary of the fund, have been the recipients, the former of a silver rose bowl and silver ornaments to match, and the latter of a solid oak timepiece, as a mark of appreciation of the services rendered by them in their respective capacities during the war.

The statement issued by Messrs. Loudon and Giles shows that 35 men from the colliery were decorated with military honours, and each was presented with a gold watch and chain at a total cost of £484, while since the last list was issued two other heroes, Sergt. Williamson and Sergt. Short had been awarded similar souvenirs.

The men of the colliery have contributed £4,200 to various war charities and institutions."
