The tank
'Egbert' at the Market Place 25/03/1918
"The tank is loaded on a N.E.R. 40 ton quintuple wagon stripped of its bolsters and refitted with anew floor and special packing".
Unlike other big loads, the tank does not require the services of a crane or like appliance, being able to wriggle on or off a truck either sideways or over the end."
The photo was taken by the Chief Mechanical Engineer's office, Mr Ramsey.

The 2nd photograph shows 'Egbert' arriving in the Market Place for Tank Week which commenced the 25th March 1918. The Market Square was decorated with scrolls and Flags and there was a special obstacle built for 'Egbert' to climb over. The tank had been brought from Halifax by Train to the North Road Station at Darlington. The Government decided to have tanks tour the country to encourage people to invest in War Bonds and Savings certificates.
