Commemorative South Africa casket for Field Marshall Roberts
A silver-gilt casket, supplied by Messrs. Harrington and Son, Darlington, was presented to Field Marshall The Right Honourable Frederick Sleigh, Earl Robert of Kandahar and Pretoria, on 5th August 1905, with a scroll recording his admission as first Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Darlington.

The casket was decorated with a group of military trophies, together with enamelled views of St. Cuthbert's Church and the No.1 Engine.

The reverse carried a relief of the war memorial, flanked on either side by the arms of Earl Roberts and the Borough.

Round the cornice were a ribbon with shamrock leaves and engraved with the battles in South Africa where the British were victorious.
