STOCKTON-ON-TEES

Gun trophies: 1914-18
A German heavy gun was offered to the town. It was suggested that the offer be declined on the grounds that the men who came back would not wish to have a constant reminder of their experiences. They had already declined an offer of a tank.

This was rejected on the grounds that our lads had won it and were entitled to it. The offer was accepted and the gun was to be installed in Norton Park Recreation ground rather than in the park, as originally suggested.

Several guns were placed at the disposal of the Lord Lieutenant of the County. It was suggested that this be one of those taken by the 5th DLI whose HQ was in Stockton. The gun was to be placed in Ropner Park.
