Death and injury in the Boer War 1901
The Durham Chronicle 08/11/1901 reports the deaths of three men from Chester-le-Street who were killed at Sterkstroom:

These were:
Pte. Temple, son of Mr. Wm. Temple, North Burns, blacksmith;
Pte. Harker, a former miner, born at Pelton Fell;
Pte. Norman, eldest son of Mr. William Norman, and foreman in his father's shop, who was married the day before he left to go to the front.

Severely wounded were:

Pte. G. Favell, son of Mr. G. Favell, host of the Pelton Fell Colliery Inn.
Pte. W.W. Storey, whose father held in important position with the North-Eastern Railway at Stella Gill.

The Durham Chronicle 29/11/1901 contains a letter written by an eye witness of the events which led to the deaths and injuries.
