Blaydon Council and Miss Cowen.
The Blaydon Council have had prepared an illuminated address on vellum for presentation to Miss Cowen, of Stella Hall, in recognition of that lady’s many charitable acts, especially towards our soldiers and sailors.
Executed by Messrs. Mawson, Swan and Morgan Ltd., Newcastle, the address is in Roman style and reads as follows:
That we, the members of the Blaydon Urban District Council, hereby place on record our sincere thanks to Miss Cowen, of Stella Hall, for her many acts of charity to the community. Especially do we desire to recognize the great assistance given by Miss Cowen to the country in the present war, principally enumerated as follows:
In providing innumerable comforts to our soldiers and sailors engaged in the war.
In the great assistance rendered to our prisoners of war in Germany
In the magnificent gifts of ambulances for the transport of wounded at home.
In the handsome donations given to the various funds throughout the country for the relief of distress, etc.
(Signed W, Latimer (Chairman); Robert Brown (vice Chairman); (followed by the signatures of the committee)
The address contains water colour drawings of Stella Hall and the Council offices and a photo of Miss Cowen is inserted at left side. The address, which is framed in a handsome English gold-swept frame, with sloping bevel, has been placed on view in the window of the ‘Blaydon Courier’ Office, 8 Church Street, Blaydon. The formal presentation will take place shortly.”
