Boys Scouts Memorial Service 1919
The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 14/04/1919 reports:

“Memorial Service at Durham to Boy Scouts.
A memorial service to Boy Scouts from Durham and district who had fallen in the war was held in Durham Cathedral at Saturday. There were about 300 scouts present from the city and neighbourhood. The clergy present included the Dean of Durham (Bishop Welldon), the Bishop of Jarrow, and Canon R.J. Knowling. Among scout officers attending were Colonel. W.H. Ritson, C.M.G., District Commissioner; Mr. Basil Sadler, Assistant Commissioner, and Captain W.T. Richardson, the County Secretary.

The Bishop of Jarrow in an address, stated that some twenty scouts from Durham and district had made the great sacrifice. The scouts had shown themselves ready for duty, ready for death, and faithful unto death. It was that duty, carried to its logical conclusion, that they were commemorating in that memorial service.

The service concluded with the singing of a verse of the National Anthem and the playing of the “Dead March” in “Saul” by the organist, Minor Canon Culley”.
