Longnewton: Thankful Village
Longnewton has been suggested as one of those villages in which all those who went to serve in both 1914-18 and 1939-45 returned home safely.

Such villages were termed "Thankful villages" by Arthur Mee, author of The King's England However, CWGC records on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium, the name of 351850 Private Anthony Cowling serving with the 16th Battalion Royal Scots who died 16/04/1918, aged 24 years.

Son of John and Elizabeth Cowling, of Long Newton, Stockton-on-Tees, Co. Durham.

The family were living at Elton in 1911, John was a game keeper and Anthony was a farm labourer.
