Chicken, V.C., Indian Mutiny
Journal 07/10/2006 carries the story of George Chicken, born Bishopwearmouth, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Indian Mutiny. He was a volunteer with the Indian Naval Brigade. He won his VC by charging into a group of about 20 Indian Mutineers during the Battle of Suhejnee in Bengal on September 4th 1858. His VC was sold at Sotheby’s in October 2006 with an pre-sale estimated value of £30,000-£40,000. A website on George Chicken
